Role profile - Chair

General responsibilities

Take responsibility for and encourage the club to think about longer-term plans (i.e. make sure we don’t just think about the immediate stuff).

Be a point of contact for external bodies and look to build positive relationships with the Council / MP / Town Council / interested local groups etc.

Speak to people in the club, find out what people like / don’t like, want more of.

Encourage new ideas and help people make them happen.

Be active and responsive on the club’s social media.

The role is about dealing with people.

The tasks

Chair committee meetings so that they stick to the agenda and decisions are taken collectively.

Work with the General Secretary to prepare committee meeting agendas.

Work with other committee members to tackle specific tasks and issues. (The chair should ‘facilitate’, advise and help bring people together to fix things - beware of taking on too much as Chair yourself, which leaves you with too much to do).

What it’s not

You’re not ‘in charge’ of the club - you’re there to help set the direction, get things done and to help the committee take decisions.
