Press Report 27 June

Postby thetrotter » Sun Jun 27, 2010 10:01 pm

This week's report:

"Steve Burke cemented his position as the Wheelers’ top short distance time trial rider at the weekend when he recorded the fastest time (52.57) by a Wheeler this year in the South Pennine 25 mile promotion on Saturday. In the same event last year, Burke broke Graham Wood's club record at the distance which had stood since 2000 and, with Dave Higham and Roger Wrenn, set a new team record. Conditions were not as fast this year and Burke’s time was good enough for 11th place in a top class field. Higham and Wrenn were also slower this year recording 55.50 and 56.26 respectively although Wrenn was second in the veterans’ competition. Lynne Skellern also rode and took five minutes off her time the previous weekend by finishing in a very fast 1.04.45.
On Tuesday evening Burke was the convincing winner of the inter club 25 mile championship between the Wheelers and Congleton CC. Burke won the event in 57.15 with Kevin Walford second in 58.56. Wrenn was the next highest Wheeler in fifth place with 1.01.23 just getting the better of Neil Morris (1.01.25), Steve Jackson (1.01.44) and Rob Foster (1.02.01). With the Wheelers filling eight of the top ten places, they ran out convincing winners in the team category.
Claire Logan has been racing less frequently this year but still turns out good times. On Monday evening she recorded 26.48 in the Stockport Clarion 10 at Chelford and on Thursday rode in a composite team in the Warrington RC 4 up team time trial. This is a very demanding discipline requiring the ability to ride at high speed in close formation and Logan’s team came tantalisingly close to breaking the magic “hour” with 1.00.47."

Very hot and quite breezy day for the South Pennine event. Thought it was hard going out until I turned for home and then I realised that it had been a tailwind! Fantastic ride by Steve in the conditions but we were never going to get close to the team record given the wind. The A25/11 is one of the fastest courses in the country and there may still be places for the MM (59.00 LTS) event on 10 July but you will need to be quick because the closing date is this Tuesday. Only other contribution I have received is from Claire :angel13: Everyone else needs to do more :homework:

Must be more careful about what I write. I was - perhaps unusually I admit - quite happy with my ride. I meant that the heat had led me to forget to say what a great ride Lynne did  On the other hand, thinking about it, it was very hot for me, my legs were hurting, my position was wrong, wind was too strong............
